Mr. Shigehiro Nishiumi, Deputy Representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Taipei Office, attended the opening ceremony of the GCTF' Workshop on Women’s Economic Empowerment.

On April 16, Mr. Shigehiro Nishiumi, Deputy Representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Taipei Office, attended the opening ceremony of the GCTF Workshop on Women’s Economic Empowerment. His opening remarks were as follows.

Good morning.

On behalf of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, it is my honor to co-host the GCTF workshop on Women’s Economic Empowerment with the American Institute in Taiwan, the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Creating a Society Where Women Shine” is one of the highest priorities for Prime Minister Abe’s administration. The Government of Japan recently hosted the Fifth World Assembly for Women (WAW!) in accordance with this objective. Over the past six years, Japan has added 2.8 million women to the workforce and the participation rate of working-age women in the workforce has risen 8.9%. As a result of these efforts, the percentage of women in the workforce is the highest it has ever been for all age groups over 25.

Of course, we acknowledge that this is not enough in itself. We fully appreciate that there is more work to be done and that we have much to learn in this respect from Taiwan and the US, as well as from other countries. We shall continue to strive ever harder to enhance women’s status across a wider range of areas.

Today, the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association is honored to be a co-host of this GCTF workshop. We are delighted to participate in this initiative and we remain fully committed to realizing the vision of “A Society Where Women Shine” through collaborating with like-minded partners in our shared agenda throughout the region.

I would like to close these remarks by extending my best wishes for the success of this workshop.

Thank you for your attention.
